Dichroic Glass Jewelry
Our glass jewelry was
designed and handmade in the San Francisco Bay Area by local artist. They
cut the raw sheets of dichroic glass into shapes and layer it with other types
of fusible glass and fire it in a kiln at about 1475° F to fuse the layers
together. The rich color brought out by the firing varies depending on how
long the piece is kept at 1475° F and how quickly it is cooled.
The word "dichroic" comes from Greek di
- "two", and chroic - "color". The glass achieves this
unique effect from a thin metallic coating that is reflective as well as transparent
- like a two-way mirror. The first color comes from the light reflected off
this coating. The second, contrasting color comes from light passing through
it.
The unique qualities of reflection and refraction
in dichroic jewelry create dynamic, wearable art.
The color changes with its environment and viewing
angle - never the same piece of jewelry twice.
